Challenger Center Boosted by $2 Million RACP Grant

There’s a new Challenger Learning Center for Space Science Education in San Antonio. The newest of almost 50 Challenger centers, it has an updated design, a futuristic look and feel — the first major redesign since the program began almost 30 years ago.

That has education and business leaders in Indiana County more excited than anyone outside Texas, because the Challenger center planned to be built in the coming year at Indiana County Technology Center in White Township will incorporate the updated layout.

Concurrent Technologies Corporation (CTC) has remembered one of the company’s former leaders and mentors with a donation that honors her passion for high-tech education and training. On October 23, 2014, the CTC Foundation, an affiliate of CTC, presented a $5,000 check in memory of Dr. Linda A. Monzo to the Central Allegheny Challenger Learning Center (CACLC). When completed the CACLC will provide an exciting, applied learning environment using space as the theme and simulation as the method promoting science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) excellence. CHALLENGER/SIFI CENTERS UNVEIL BUILDING PLANS

Yesterday at a Chamber After Hours event, the plans for the Central Allegheny Challenger Learning Center and the STEM Institute for Future Innovators were unveiled, and some recent donations were acknowledged.

The building that will house both centers will be a two-story building connected to the Indiana County Technology Center, with the top floors dedicated to two STEM labs located on the top floor, and the Challenger program taking up most of the ground floor, including an immersive simulator and space station setup where several different missions ranging from repairing a low-Earth-orbit satellite to a trip to Mars can be completed by students taking part in the Challenger program. State Chips in $500,000 for Challenger + Architectural Rendering Revealed

The joint operating committee planning the Central Allegheny Challenger Learning Center and the STEM Institute for Future Innovators (SIFI) to be built on the ICTC campus in White Township Friday evening unveiled plans for the proposed technology center. And they celebrated another major funding boost for the project.

The Joint Operating Committee of the Indiana County Technology Center voted today to pledge Challenger/Sci-Fi STEM Institute $600,000 in adult education funds towards our project!  Larry did a great presentation, and the board and staff were very supportive in their comments, particularly in their opinion that affordable higher “STEM” education and work force development are the two keys to success.
Thanks to all of you for helping get this done.  Your support and belief in this project have impressed everyone.

Indiana County, Pennsylvania Tourist Board Donates $30,000 To Challenger Learning Center.

The board committed $30,000 to assist in obtaining a simulator needed to establish the center, which will offer space and science education in replicas of NASA Mission Control and International Space Station labs to be built at Indiana County Technology Center. (more…)

Busy, Busy, Busy

We have been very busy at Challenger since our January reception at the Indiana County Technology Center, and we have some exciting news to report:

First, we have raised enough funds since January to hire Mr. Larry Segal and his firm Impact Pennsylvania Strategies, LLC as the Project Manager for the Central Allegheny Challenger Learning Center!  Please join me in welcoming Larry to our team!

We at Challenger have received a wonderful holiday gift!

Earlier this week Governor Tom Corbett approved our request to obtain 1.365 million dollars from the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) in matching grant monies to build and develop our Challenger Learning Center!  (more…)
